Bonnet of black velvet, trimmed with purple satin and purple satin riband, forming a large bow in the front and behind. One black ostrich feather placed in the front. The hair dressed in light curls; the hind hair in ringlets. Round gown of striped and figured dimity, scalloped in coquelicot. Large muslin handkerchief and full cravat. Coquelicot-coloured sash. French grey satin cloak, trimmed with white fur. Black and white striped fur muff. Red Morocco slippers. |
Dresses in Polonaise style. The polonaise "consisted of a dress or overdress, the tightly-boned bodice lined as far as the waist, with a skirt opening from the waist downwards, suggested by the national dress of Polish women" (Lesley Gordon, A Gallery of Fashion, Exeter: Webb and Bower, 1984, p. 24). The lady in front has a spangled satin skirt trimmed with gold fringe under her red polonaise overdress. She has a white fur tippet draped around her neck. The lady in the center has a headdress that matches her polonaise in color, while next to her is a lady in a black-stripped rose polonaise. Her headdress has pearls twisted around the bandeau, while her plumes have some pink dye on them to match the dress. | |
