The husband here is in military uniform. See The Men's Page for images of non-military dress of 1812. His wife is in a cream shawl dress with a navy blue shawl above it. Such shawls were very expensive and a sign of wealth; thus, they are frequently depicted in portraits of the time. The sleeve here is very similar in style to the long sleeve shown in the shawl dress of 1811 depicted in Costume Parisiens.
