Issue No. 1.According to Alice Mackrell, Shawls, Stoles and Scarves (NY: Drama Books, 1986), "The white skirt with blue border, tight-fitting caraco in blue-and-white-striped satin, patterned mouchoir anglais, echoing the colours of skirt and caraco, billowing white gauze fichu menteur, felt hat trimmed with silver and surmounted by an aigrette, are all typical of the opulent dress early in the French Revolution" (26).February 25, 1790 Plate. Issue No. 1. It is difficult to see, but the waistcoat here is spangled in gold upon the red. The jacket is striped in blue and black.
March 5, 1790, Plate 1. Issue no. 2. Dress in the "patriotique" style of red, white, and blue. The pink roses are not considered clashing. April 15, 1790, Plate 1. Issue no. 6. Giuliana Chesne Dauphiné Griffo describes this plate as: "Young aristocrat wearing a dress of `semi-mourning,' indicating a partial converion to the constitution, but also in remebrance of past times--a style know as `en demi-deuil.'" Giuliana Chesne Dauphiné Griffo describes this plate as: "Uniform of a city councillor, whose hair is dressed `à l'conseillè,' wearing a sah in nationalist colors and carrying a report of the National Assembly sessions." June 1790. September 1790. The lady's brown dress has three rows of flounces on the hem. The overdress of bright yellow drags behind her in a scalloped train.
October 15, 1790, Plate 1. Issue no. 24. A dress of red, blue, and white indicates this lady's patriotism during the French revolution. Her plumes are red on one side and white on the other. The white petticoat is trimmed with two bands of laurels. The hat is decorated with a plissé of white lace, in the form of a bastion.1790 Plate, issue not known. A pale lavender dress covers a white ruffled petticoat. High tan leather gloves cover the lower arms. The tricolor ribbon in the hair indicates the lady's patriotism during the French revolution.
